So, you said yes! Maybe it was a big surprise, there was a lot of fanfare. Or it was a quiet moment over coffee. If you’re like me, after 8 years, you told your partner, “we’re getting married.” The point is, you’re engaged! Now that you’ve taken the leap and said “I do” to forever, it’s time to dive into the exciting world of wedding planning. As a Central NY wedding photographer, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing countless love stories unfold. I’m here to share some tips and insights on what to do next after you’ve said those magical words.
First things first
Take a moment to bask in the joy and excitement of your engagement. This is a special time in your life, and it’s important to celebrate the love and commitment you share with your partner. Pop the champagne, share the news with your loved ones, and revel in the happiness of this milestone moment.
Once the initial excitement has settled, it’s time to start thinking about the next steps in your wedding planning journey.
Here are a few key things to consider as you begin to embark on this adventure together:
Share the News: Spread the word about your engagement far and wide! Whether you opt for a heartfelt phone call, a personalized announcement on social media, or a traditional engagement party with friends and family, sharing your joy with the world is an important part of the process.
Dream Big, But Be Realistic: Sit down with your partner and start brainstorming ideas for your dream wedding. From the venue and the guest list to the color scheme and the overall vibe, let your imagination run wild. At the same time, it’s essential to be realistic about your budget and your priorities. Set a budget early on to help guide your decision-making process and avoid any unnecessary stress down the line.
Start Researching Vendors: Central New York is home to a wealth of talented wedding vendors, from photographers and florists to caterers and DJs. Begin researching potential vendors in your area and reach out to inquire about their availability and pricing. Don’t be afraid to ask for recommendations from friends, family, and other couples who have recently tied the knot. Many vendors can also help you fill in the blanks if needed! After 12 years in the industry I have a ton of recommendations if needed!
Consider Your Timeline: While it’s natural to be excited and eager to start planning your wedding, it’s important to consider your timeline carefully. It’s early in the process, so you don’t need to start nailing things down to the minute. However, it can be helpful to take into account factors such as the season, the availability of your preferred vendors, and any other important milestones or events in your lives. Give yourself plenty of time to plan and prepare so that you can enjoy the process without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.
Schedule Engagement Photos: Last but certainly not least, consider scheduling an engagement photo session with a local photographer (me!). Not only is this a great way to capture some beautiful memories of this special time in your lives, but it’s also an opportunity to get comfortable in front of the camera before your big day. Plus, you’ll end up with some stunning photos to use for save-the-dates, wedding websites, and more. Many wedding photographers include an engagement session when you book so definitely check that out as an option!
Remember, this is your story, and your wedding day should be a reflection of the unique bond you share with your partner. Enjoy the journey, embrace the planning process, and savor every moment along the way.
