You’ll be looking back at your wedding photos for years to come, so it’s important that they are photos that you love and adore. Part of ensuring that happens is figuring out what style you want your photos to have.
As a wedding photographer who loves love and capturing documentary-style, colorful wedding photos, I always say that love is full of life, and your photos should be, too. However, you need to choose which style is best for you intentionally.
This blog covers different wedding photography styles. It will help you decide if colorful wedding photography is right for you and guide you on matching your ideas of what you want with your photographer’s style.
Before we jump into some of the different wedding photography styles, I want to mention one thing about styles. When you are looking at different styles of wedding photography, there are two things to keep in mind: the actual photography style and the editing style.
We will be mainly talking about the editing style here (aka the colors and tones that you will see in your photos). Before you hire a photographer, though, it is important that you find one that has both an editing and a photography style that you love to make sure the photos are exactly what you are looking for.
Now that we have that covered, here are just a few examples of some popular editing styles!
Colorful wedding photography is all about creating timeless and emotional photos that vividly capture your special day.
These photos definitely pop and stand out. They are warm and inviting while still authentically capturing you and your partner’s personalities. This style also tends to be more true to life.
Compared to the other styles we will cover in just a minute, this is one that really leans into the true colors that you experience on your wedding day. It is a great style if you want photos that feel really authentic and true to life.
When it comes to a dark and moody style, these photos will feel a bit more dramatic than colorful wedding photography. This style leans into deeper reds, blues, oranges, and blacks to create that moody effect.
For some couples, this is the perfect aesthetic and matches the vibe they are going for with their wedding. However, this may not be the best option if you plan on having a day filled with pops of color.
Finally, we have black-and-white photography. This style is one that you may honestly see mixed in with many other editing styles. It is not uncommon to see black-and-white photos added to your galleries.
Black-and-white photography creates a certain sense of nostalgia and timelessness. Certain photos, like portraits or even emotional candid moments, can work really well as black-and-white photos. However, you probably don’t want all of your photos in black-and-white.
As someone who associates their style with colorful wedding photography, my question for you is: If your love were a color, what would it be? (My guess is that it’s not neutral.)
Love moves us. It’s most visible when you’re laughing. And I’m a little biased in saying this, but I believe that the best photos are the ones that capture all the colors and the joyful atmosphere of your wedding celebration.
Colorful wedding photography is a great style choice for you if you are someone who doesn’t want their photos to have muted, brown, or orange tones that make them look very different than the memory of your day. Rather, this style relies on using bold and bright colors.
This style also allows you to highlight all of the amazing details vibrantly and authentically and the goal is that your photos feel as real as you are.
Ultimately, colorful wedding photography puts a focus on capturing the energy and vibrancy of your celebration in its truest form and isn’t about muting or diminishing any of the beauty, color, and richness of your wedding day.
Before you choose a wedding photographer, it’s important to think about how you want to look back on your photos 10, 20, even 30 years down the road. Do you want them to feel stylized and luxurious? Do you want them to feel true to life and vibrant?
All of these things are important to think about so you don’t end up getting your photos and find yourself unhappy with them (I mean, I think we’ve all seen the Sepia Bride drama). So, to help ensure you are on the right track, here are some tips directly from a wedding photographer to help you pick the right fit.
One of the best ways to know if the photographer you’re considering is the right fit for you is to look at their galleries and portfolios. You’ll be able to see right away if they capture photos in the style and aesthetic that you’re looking for.
Look at how they edit their photos, the colors and tones they use, and the overall vibe of their photos so that you can confidently make your decision if you choose to work with them.
Don’t be afraid to ask us your questions.
If you’re looking for an added element to your photos, ask the photographer if they can make this happen and if they have any examples of it with past clients (you’d be shocked at how many photos we have that we don’t have in our galleries).
For example, let’s say you love blurred photos but haven’t seen any featured in their galleries. Ask them if they have experience with this style and if they can give you examples of their work.
You can also ask them questions about how your vision aligns with their style and how they can ensure that they capture your vision in their photography.
Take some time to read through the reviews that they have published on their website or social media channels so you can get a better idea of what other people’s experiences were like working with them.
Look at the language their previous clients have used and assess if how they describe their experience meets your own expectations of what you’re looking for. Google Reviews is also another great place to check, as we aren’t always able to put all of our reviews on our websites!
Who doesn’t love color? Just imagine having your wedding album full of photos that capture the joy, vibrancy, and energy of your wedding day!
Colorful wedding photography could be the exact photography style you didn’t know you were looking for but that you realize you have fallen in love with.
On a final note, just remember that whichever photography style you choose, make sure that it feels good for you and aligns with your wedding vision—that’s what’s most important!
