It’s true that a wedding day can be less than calm. That doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice those beautiful moments of connection with your partner. It does help if you strategically build them into your day, though! With these wedding day tips, you and your partner can make time for each other.
5 Wedding Day Tips for Connecting with Your Partner
These ideas will help you and your partner stay focused on each other, not the chaos around you, on your wedding day.
1. Do a first look.
First looks don’t have to be a big production if that’s not your thing. In fact, it’s a great time to share a private, peaceful moment with your partner. You have a chance to connect with each other before all of your guests’ eyes are on you. Some people find that this takes the pressure off the moment they see each other at the ceremony too.
I love photographing first looks because people get so caught up in the moment that they’re completely themselves. That authenticity and joy create the most unforgettable images. As a bonus, it’s like getting a portrait session when you’re fresh from getting ready. If you decide to do a first look, make sure you work with your photographer to account for it in your timeline.
2. Spend a few minutes alone after the ceremony.
After you say “I do,” your guests will want your attention as soon as they can get it. It’s understandable that they want to share their excitement and well wishes. One of my favorite wedding day tips is to put them off a little bit. Pop into a side room or quiet corner for ten minutes. Just enjoy the fact that you’re actually married now! Enlist a trustworthy coordinator or wedding party member to keep everyone out while you take your time together.
Some couples work with their planners to set up drinks and snacks too. It’s easy to get pulled in so many directions that you don’t get to enjoy the cocktail hour treats you spent so long choosing. Why not tuck some away and enjoy them together?
3. Write love letters to each other.
You can connect with each other before you even see each other on your wedding day! Start the day off by exchanging love letters that you’ve written. You can step out of the hustle and bustle of the getting ready area to read the letter in a calm space. If you’re feeling a little shy about your public vows, this is a way to make sure your partner knows just how much you love them. Include all the inside jokes and nicknames you want. This is just for the two of you.
4. Actually eat your dinner together.
Conventional lists of wedding day tips often leave out something important: Actually sit down and eat your dinner together. Take the time to chat with each other. Enjoy the amazing food you ordered. Look out at your family and friends and enjoy the fact that they’re all there to celebrate your relationship. Again you might want to enlist a helpful person to keep people from interrupting you for a little bit while you connect.
5. Dance together at your reception!
Now that you’ve found ways to grab moments alone, it’s time to get out on the dance floor and party! How often do you spend this kind of money to throw a big party? Enjoy it together, and let loose on the dance floor.
